Sending a parcel is easy. Well, not entirely – and this is especially true if you are in the business of sending out parcels to customers regularly. If you have an e-commerce website or are tasked with sending important documents or items to clients or business partners, it pays to know what you need to do in order to send your parcel correctly. Some intricacies are also associated with specific items, such as books, electronic gadgets, etc. If you want to be sure that your parcel arrives at its final destination intact and in one piece (and doesn’t get lost on the way, either!), then here are some top tips on the correct and proper packaging of your UK parcels.

General Guidelines

Following are a few general guidelines for wrapping and securing your parcels:

  • Make use of padded envelopes if you are sending items that are oddly shaped or with sharp corners or edges
  • If you are using an outer container, it should be adequately strong so that it can protect the box and the item inside
  • If you are sending fragile or delicate items in one container, make sure they don’t touch each other or the container’s sides
  • Write the recipient’s address as clearly and legibly as possible on the front of the box and if there is a postcode, make sure to include it. Along with this, don’t forget to include a return address
  • It’s good practice to have the recipient’s address and telephone number on the inside of the box as well – write it down on a piece of paper and place it inside with the item you are sending
  • Avoid using string or ribbons to secure the parcel – instead, use strong tape such as vinyl or nylon to seal it securely. Make sure to use tape for the container’s openings and all its edges
  • If there is any sharp edge, you can flatten and cover it with tape
  • If the item you are planning to send is fragile, write ‘fragile’ on the outside of the container

There are also specific guidelines for wrapping, securing, and packing different items, like books, electronic gadgets, and more. Here are some guidelines on a few:

For Books:

The corners and bindings of books may get damaged, so you should send it with enough packaging material. For smaller books, use a padded envelope, and for larger or heavier books, use a sturdy box or container such as white postal boxes, which are double-lined and are made from the highest quality kraft board.

For Electronic Gadgets or Items:

For smaller gadgets or items like MP3 players, iPods, satellite navigation items, and ebooks, use at least 1 centimetre of cushioning around the item (bubble wrap works great for this). For larger gadgets such as iPads, laptops, DVD players, and so on, make sure to have at least 5 centimetres of cushioning around the item. For this, you can use bubble wrap as well as polyblocks, polystyrene chips, packing foam or peanuts.

Make sure to cover the plugs and pins in 1 centimeter of cushioning so you can avoid damage to the outside packaging and contents. If there are any loose components or parts, wrap them carefully and individually as well.
