TikTok has been one of the most downloaded smartphone applications for months. The app has seen steady growth since 2017, which only slowed down for the first time in the last quarter.
Two out of five users of the rapidly growing video app from China are in the 16 to 24 age group.
TikTok has been booming around the globe for a good three years: the app from China enables the creation of funny video snippets on the smartphone and is becoming increasingly popular, especially with teenagers and young adults.
Due to its origin from the Middle Kingdom, the service has quite a political taste, as was shown in the context of the Hong Kong protests at the end of 2019 – which we also dealt with in a big WiWo story at the time.
Growth of TikTok
Nevertheless, due to its enormous growth and its disproportionately young target group, the platform remains an important medium for corporate advertising activities. In this country, for example, the mail-order company Otto and the Bundesliga clubs FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are already swimming in the TikTok stream.
No wonder, because the app has now recorded more than 1.5 billion downloads. The number of monthly current users is likely to be somewhere between 500 and 700 million – the company does not publish exact figures.

Two out of five users are in the 16- to 24-year-old age category (41 percent). And if you have teenagers of this age yourself, you may have an inkling of how addicting TikTok is for many. So it is hardly surprising that the average app usage is now more than 61 minutes a day.
One billion monthly active users
As early as 2018, TikTok made it one of the fastest-growing mobile apps in the world. According to the latest information, the application has one billion monthly active users, and in May the mark of two billion downloads was broken. For ByteDance, TikTok is good business. In 2019, the Beijing company reported sales of the equivalent of US $ 20 billion.
The app last caused negative headlines in this country at the end of June with the “Kulikitaka” challenge, in which – for the merengue title of the same name by singer Toño Rosario – cows, in particular, are frightened, which annoyed numerous farmers.
Comparison with other Social Apps
TikTok is particularly popular with girls (46 percent); only 38 percent of boys use the service. For comparison, the world’s largest social network, Facebook, is only slightly more popular with young people at 48 percent (see graphic). Snapchat (62 percent) and Instagram (76 percent) follow at a greater distance. The messenger service WhatsApp and the video platform YouTube, which belongs to Google, are used most frequently by young people in Austria (91 percent each).
