For many, showing affection to their family is a simple task. In addition to using the ‘magic words’, there are various details and attitudes that we can use to show what we feel. How you show your family that you love them. You may think to show your family that you love them, that it means walking on the street and saying sweet things to each other so that everyone can see and hear. However, sweet words that are said privately are far more valuable than public expressions of affection. If you don’t know how to tell your family that you love them, then you can start expressing your feelings when no one is listening. That makes it much easier.

Do you find it hard to say how you feel? Here are some useful tips.

  1. Don’t be shy

You may not tell how you feel towards your family because you are too shy or embarrassed. However, do you know how to overcome your fear, shame and embarrassment? By saying what you feel! You don’t have to say anything eloquent or comprehensive. Just a few magic words such as “I love you” are enough. What is the worst that could happen? That they tell you they love you too!

  1. Leave small messages

If you feel that you are still not willing to show your family directly that you love them, you can leave a message. Place a note somewhere that they can find if you are not there, such as:

Note on the bedside table

Card on the fridge door

Unexpected e-mail

A short but sweet text

This is a great place to start if you are not sure how to express your feelings for them.

  1. Give compliments

Showing your love for your family goes beyond the use of specific words. It also has a lot to do with small, daily actions. Giving compliments is an excellent way to let your family know what you think of them. Often we just assume that others know what we think about them. It may be true that they know, but it never hurts to show your family that you love them. For example, you can complement them for a delicious meal, for keeping their rooms clean, for obtaining good grades at school, for a performance at work, or for how they have dealt with a difficult situation. Compliments are a form of empathy and give the recipient a happy and proud feeling … And it does the same for the person who gives them.

  1. Show your family that you love them through physical contact

Words are not the only way to express your love for your family. Hugs, kisses, caresses and stroking over the back are also excellent ways to show affection. In fact, people need physical contact from those around them to feel loved, cared for, and respected. For example, you can touch the arm, hand, or head of a family member when you talk to him or her. Or you can hold their hands while walking through the park, or greet them with a hug after spending the day apart.

  1. Have fun together

Spending time with our children, brothers and sisters, parents or partner is another way to show that we care about them. When we devote our time to our loved ones, we let them feel important and that there is nothing that we would rather do. Remember that time is short and that you only have to spend your time doing what is really important. Being with your family must have priority.

So, go to the park or to the movies, enjoy an evening of playing cards or board games, dance together or just laugh together. What could be better than spending time having fun with the people you love the most?

  1. Help them

Another practical way to show your family how much you love them is by offering your help. For example, you can work together to do household chores or help your children with their homework. These are just a few options, but the options are endless. You can help them resolve a situation at work or a conflict with a friend, go to an appointment with a doctor, etc. You don’t always have to wait for someone to ask. Surprise your loved ones with an unexpected favor!

  1. Show your family that you are sorry

Asking forgiveness if you make mistakes is another way to show your family that you love them. Why? We then show that they are important to us and that we are willing to do what is necessary to correct our mistakes. Finally, you can show your family that you love them through small gifts. They don’t have to be expensive or even bought in the store. Homemade, personalized gifts are much more meaningful, because you put a part of yourself in it.
