How to Lock a Door Without a Lock: Top 4 Ways

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to try and lock a door that doesn’t have a lock on it, you might be dumbfounded as far as what you should do.

Fortunately, there are some pretty simple steps that you can take when trying to learn how to lock a door without a lock on it. You can stop someone from getting into a room that you’re in by taking one of them.

Here are four easy ways to lock a door that doesn’t already have a lock on it.

1. Stick a Chair Under the Handle of the Door

If you’re looking for an easy way to lock a door in an instant and you happen to have a chair nearby, you can use it to keep the door closed for at least a little while. Simply stick the back of the chair under the handle of the door and let it lock your door for you.

This method isn’t always going to keep a door locked for very long. If someone pushes hard enough on the door, the chair will eventually break.

It’s going to take some work on the part of the person trying to get through the door to break the chair. If nothing else, locking a door with a chair will give you some time to think about what you’re going to do next.

2. Slide a Piece of Furniture in Front of the Door

While a chair should work when you’re trying to figure out how to lock a door without a lock, a larger piece of furniture would be even better. You can slide a desk, a couch, or almost anything else that you can find in front of a door to barricade it.

It’s going to be very hard for someone to break into a room when there is furniture on the other side of a door. You should go good to go as long as the furniture is heavy-duty enough.

3. Put a Wedge Down at the Bottom of the Door

Door wedges are typically used to prop doors open, not keep them closed. If you’re in a bind, you can stick a door wedge at the bottom of a door to lock it up.

It’s not going to be as effective as something like the RhinoWare Connect but it should stop a door from being opened easily when you’re trying to figure out how to lock your door on a whim.

4. Tie the Handle on a Door to Something Near It

If there is something sturdy located near the handle on a door, you might be able to tie your door handle to it with a piece of rope or even a belt to lock the door. The door isn’t going to open like usual when its handle is tied to something else.

This is a great approach to take when you have two doors right next to each other. You can tie their handles together to stop someone from opening either of them.
