Time was when Lisbon was something of a Cinderella city, excluded from the destination capitals of Europe, but those days are long gone and today Lisbon is one of the hottest property markets in Europe, attracting purchasers from around the globe. Locals have taken to calling Lisbon and the neighbouring Algarve, ‘the California of Europe’ because so many celebrities, Madonna and John Malkovich among them, have bought property in the area. There are plenty of reasons why Lisbon is such a great place to live, but here’s just six of them.

  1. Lisbon is in the top three Expat City Rankings for 2020

‘Internations’, is the world’s largest expat organisation, with over three and a half million members, and according to its Expat City Ranking survey, out of 66 cities, Lisbon is the third favourite among ex-pats. When you consider that Rome and Paris ended up in the bottom ten, that’s quite and accolade.  The survey looked at a range of criteria: quality of urban living, urban work life, housing, getting settled and cost of living.

  1. Lisbon named the third most innovative city.

In a report by Ambr eyewear, Lisbon ranked third for innovation behind Paris and Barcelona. The city has 34 universities and 53% of its 20–30-year-olds are stem graduates, so it is hardly surprising that the city has become a magnet for start-ups and tech nomads. Both Google and Amazon have research bases in the city.

  1. Lisbon is the most popular holiday destination for Europeans in 2021.

Pre-pandemic, London was the most popular destination for European travellers, but things have changed. According to the ODIGEO eDreams study, Lisbon now has the most bookings for 2021.

  1. Climate

With 300 days of sunshine a year and proximity to the beaches of the Algarve, recently recognised as the best beach destination in the world, the attraction is plain. And it’s not just the summer season that makes Lisbon such an attractive place to live. Compared to other European capitals, Lisbon ranks high among those with the warmest winters, and it has some of the mildest winter nights.

  1. Lisbon is recognised as an alpha-level global city.

Its International airport connects with 120 destinations. Since 2016 it’s been home to Websummit, an indication of its importance in the tech world. It’s a financial centre, a commercial centre and it has a burgeoning arts and media sector.

  1. Lisbon’s rich cultural legacy

Lisbon is the second oldest European capital city, and its rich cultural heritage is reflected in its magnificent and varied architecture. Its grand buildings reflect architectural styles from the Roman period through to Art Nouveau fantasies and breath-taking modernism. Its winding streets, which climb the city’s seven hills, offer surprising vistas and beautiful panoramas. And when your feet tire, take a seat at a street-side café, sample the outstanding local wines or fresh seafood and as the evening draws on enjoy some traditional fado.
