Coronavirus has forced people around the world to change the way they live their lives. Even though we’re reaching some form of ‘normality’, there’s still a lot of uncertainty in the air. How did people cope with lockdown situations?
Baking
Concentrating on certain tasks can keep your thoughts from racing in your head. Baking is one of them. It doesn’t matter how skilled you are at it; it can be a great way to distract yourself and learn a new skill at the same time. Baking allows you to use your senses. Pouring ingredients into a mixing bowl, feeling the dough in your hands, smelling freshly baked cakes or other items, and then enjoying them… Whenever you have some time, you can develop or find new recipes and plan your next baking project.
Video games
You can experience a whole new world just by playing a video game. Whether you choose a PlayStation game like Ghost of Tsushima or Marvel’s Spider-Man or use your smartphone to try out Pokémon GO or Call of Duty: Mobile – simply forgetting things around you for an hour or so can be a great way to take a mental break and recharge.
Slippers
Invest in comfortable slippers and clothes to wear around the house. The right kind of soft slippers can be comforting when snuggling up with a book or a good Netflix show.
The demand for slippers has actually increased during lockdown and there are so many cosy options available.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Katherine Hamilton, junior buyer of women’s shoes at John Lewis, discussed how important comfort at home has become during lockdown: “Since the first lockdown began in March 2020, we have seen overwhelming demand for slippers as comfort has become the nation’s number one priority,” she said.
Virtual socialising/Streaming services
Thankfully, there are still plenty of ways to stay connected to friends and family, even if you spend lockdown all by yourself. Connect through video chats and use streaming services in order to not lose touch with the rest of the world and feel a part of a community again. A survey by the Office for National Statistics asked participants how they coped while spending more time than usual indoors during the coronavirus. Almost 80% answered that they stay in touch with family and friends remotely. More than 40% say that they continue to carry out the same tasks online that they did before the pandemic.
Join a book club
An excellent way to spend your time during lockdown is to read or to listen to an Audiobook. Reading allows you to escape into a different world, created by the author, and take a break from reality. You don’t necessarily need to join an online book club, but you could simply discuss the books you read with friends on social media.
Although it may not seem like it, you have probably picked up valuable coping strategies during lockdown. If you are struggling to find a way to cope with loneliness or boredom, you can find many useful articles online or ask friends offline or on social media.
