1. Spend Time Enjoying the Water

If you’re unsure how to swim, then chances are you haven’t spent too much time in the water. Before you can jump in and start swimming, you must first spend time enjoying the water and becoming comfortable in it. You can do so by starting in the shallow end.

Take it one step at a time. While spending time in the shallow end, place your face in the water. Get comfortable getting your face wet.

You can also learn to float in the shallow end as well. If there’s ever a moment when you feel as though you’re unable to swim, simply roll to your back, relax, and float!

2. Learn to Tread Water

Treading the water is one of the first things babies are taught in swim lessons, right next to learning how to float. To tread water, your body will stay in a vertical position with your head above the water. You’ll then begin to pedal each leg as if you’re riding a bike.

However, when doing so, you should pedal your legs in opposite directions. Your arms will stay on top of the water’s surface. Each arm will move in a circle breaking the water’s surface.

Be sure to move one arm in a clockwise motion and the other in a counter-clockwise motion.

3. Practice Kicking Your Legs

Kicking your legs is an essential part of swimming. To practice kicking, you can hold onto the side of the pool with your hands and begin kicking your feet. Once you feel comfortable, you can let go and roll to your back.

While in the floating position, begin to kick your legs. There are a few different ways to kick, so be sure to try them all to experience how each one differs. If you sign up for swimming lessons, such as lessons at State Swim, the instructors will teach you different kicking techniques.
